About the Event

The Living Breath Foundation held a fun, casual, surf-themed evening that included appetizers, a BBQ dinner, salads, a no host bar, music and an opportunity to meet World Famous Pro Surfers.

In attendance from the Mauli Ola team were Kala Alexander, Kalani Robb, Hans Hagen, Gavin Beschen, Dougie Tananka, Shawn "Barney" Baron, Nissin Osterneck, and James Dunlop. This was in support of The Mauli Ola Foundation’s Santa Cruz Surf Experience Day for Cystic Fibrosis.

The Link Between Surfing and CF.

Australian surfers who have cystic fibrosis reported that they could breathe more easily after riding the waves. Scientists took a look, and found that the moist salty ocean air really does improve the symptoms of CF.

People with CF develop thick mucus in their lungs; this thick mucus provides a breeding ground for life-threatening bacterial infections. Salty air and water act to loosen up the mucus, making it easier to cough out. Thanks to the surfers, scientists have developed a new treatment for CF called hypertonic saline therapy.

The Mauli Ola Foundation’s Surf Experience Days were created to get people with CF out on the waves. The Mauli Ola Foundation provides the equipment and lessons, and everyone with CF is invited to come spend a day at the beach learning to surf. It’s great exercise, it’s lots of fun, and it’s natural hypertonic saline therapy: in other words, it’s awesome!

This year, the Living Breath Foundation was proud to sponsor the Mauli Ola Foundation’s Surf Experience Day in Santa Cruz through our fundraiser, Surfing the Salty Seas.
